A Gentle Answer — Proverbs 15:1

A Gentle Answer — Proverbs 15:1

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

— Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)

Sometimes, it starts with just one moment.

A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
Or a feeling that suddenly grows too big.

Two children are talking, and something small turns into something more.
Voices get louder.
Faces get tighter.
And before they know it, the moment feels heavy.

Maybe you’ve seen this before.
Maybe your child has felt it.
Maybe… you have too.

It’s easy to respond quickly,
especially when we feel upset.

To say something sharp.
To speak without thinking.

But this verse gives us a different way.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath…”

Not a loud answer.
Not a fast answer.

A gentle one.

Gentle words are powerful in a quiet way.

They don’t push harder.
They don’t make things bigger.

They soften the moment.

Imagine if, instead of reacting with frustration, a child pauses…
takes a breath…
and says:

“It’s okay.”
“Let’s try again.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Those words don’t just change the sentence—
they change the whole atmosphere.

Anger begins to fade.
Hearts begin to calm.
Connection begins to return.

That’s the power of a gentle answer.

It doesn’t mean we ignore how we feel.
It doesn’t mean we pretend everything is fine.

It means we choose to respond with care.

And that choice…
is what makes the difference.

Children can learn this.

Not perfectly.
Not every time.

But step by step.

They can learn to pause.
To breathe.
To choose words that bring peace instead of more conflict.

And when they do~
they become peacemakers.
