💛 Raising Kind Kids Starts With Me
A Sunday Reflection on Luke 6:31
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
— Luke 6:31 (NIV)
It’s short, simple, and sounds like something every mom says at least ten times a day:
“Would you like it if someone did that to you?”
“Treat your sister how you want to be treated.”
“Use kind words!”
But today, I want to take a moment to speak not just to our children — but to us, the parents. The caregivers. The moms.
Because Luke 6:31 isn’t just a verse for playground scuffles or preschool manners.
It’s a mirror. A quiet nudge from God that says:
“Hey… you too.”
👩👧 What Do They See in Me?
Our kids are watching.
Not just how we treat them, but how we treat:
- The slow cashier at the store
- The neighbor who never waves back
- Our spouse when we’re tired
- Other moms at the school gate
- Ourselves, when we make mistakes
When Jesus says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you,”
He’s inviting us into something deeper than manners.
He’s teaching us the culture of Heaven — lived out in everyday, small moments.
🧠 A Gentle Check-In
Let’s pause here and ask ourselves some hard but holy questions:
- Would I want my child to copy the way I talk when I’m frustrated?
- Would I feel loved if someone spoke to me the way I speak to my spouse when I’m stressed?
- Do I show kindness to strangers — the kind of kindness I hope my children will show someday?
- Am I giving myself the same grace I’m trying to teach my child?
Sometimes, the verse that seems “for kids” is actually most convicting for adults.
🌱 Teaching Starts With Living
We can’t model perfection — and we’re not supposed to.
But we can model growth, repentance, and intentional kindness.
Here’s what that might look like:
- Apologizing when we overreact
- Letting our kids see us forgive someone
- Speaking gently about people, even when we disagree
- Choosing love over sarcasm
- Making room for the lonely mom, the awkward child, or the person who’s “different”
These little moments are more powerful than a dozen Sunday School lessons.
👩👦 For Our Children, For Ourselves
Let’s teach our children Luke 6:31 not just with our mouths —
but with our mornings, our mealtimes, our mistakes, and our mended hearts.
✨ Try This at Home:
- 📖 Memory Verse of the Week: Write Luke 6:31 on a sticky note and place it on your fridge or mirror.
- ❤️ Family Challenge: Ask each family member:
“What’s one way someone made you feel loved this week?” Then challenge each other to do that for someone else. -
🧘Mom Moment: Before bed, ask yourself:
“Did I treat others the way I want to be treated today?”
If the answer is no — bring it to God.
Tomorrow is full of new mercy.
💬 Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to live out Your kindness in every room I enter.
May my words build up, my actions reflect Your love, and my heart be quick to listen.
Teach me to treat others — including myself — with the grace You freely give.
In Jesus name, Amen.
📌 Save This, Share This
If this post made you pause, reflect, or breathe a little deeper — save it.
Let it be a reminder that we’re not raising perfect kids. We’re raising watchers of Jesus… and we’re learning right alongside them. 💛
