💛 Putting On God’s Heart
Colossians 3:12 – “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (NIV)
✨ What If We Could Wear God's Heart?
Every morning, children decide what to wear — a cozy sweater, favorite sneakers, maybe something sparkly or cool. But imagine if they also had a closet filled with clothes like Kindness, Patience, and Gentleness?
That’s exactly what Colossians 3:12 is teaching us.
This verse invites us — children and adults alike — to treat virtues like a wardrobe. Just as we put on clothes before starting our day, we can also “put on” compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
And guess what? These heart clothes never go out of style, and they fit everyone perfectly.
🧡 What Does It Mean for Kids?
In our Sunday School class today, we talked about what it looks like to “wear” God’s heart:
-
Compassion looks like comforting a classmate who is sad.
-
Kindness is offering to share your crayons, even your favorite one.
-
Humility means letting others go first, even when you really want to be first.
-
Gentleness is using soft words when someone makes a mistake.
-
Patience is waiting without whining (a big one for little hearts!).
We even acted out little role plays — and yes, giggles happened. But you know what else happened? A little “aha” spark in their eyes when they realized: they can choose these clothes every day.
🧠 Learning Point for Parents and Teachers:
Research shows that when children are guided to identify emotions and practice empathy (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015), it strengthens both academic performance and emotional regulation. And it starts with modeling — from adults and peers alike.
So, what does this look like at home?
-
Talk about "heart clothes" during your morning routine.
-
Reflect on the day at bedtime: “Which heart clothes did you wear today?”
-
Create a “Kindness Closet” printable chart for tracking loving actions.
Let it be playful, simple, and woven into the daily rhythm of your family.
🌈 Gentle Reflection for Adults:
This verse reminds us that we are “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.”
Before we teach our children how to be kind — we are reminded that we are loved.
So take a breath.
Maybe the day was hard. Maybe patience ran thin.
But tomorrow, the closet opens again.
And God's heart is always ready for us to wear.
