Do What Is Right
“And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” -Micah 6:8-

Sometimes, doing the right thing is easy.
You find someone's pencil on the floor.
“Here, you dropped this!”
Easy.
But sometimes, doing the right thing costs us something.
You notice that the cashier gave you too much change.
Nobody else noticed.
You accidentally break something and could easily blame someone else.
No one saw you.
Your friends are laughing at a child sitting alone—and staying quiet would be much easier than speaking up.
Those are the moments when right and wrong stop being words in a lesson.
They become choices.
And little by little, those choices become who we are.
🧭 The Compass Inside Your Heart
Imagine carrying a tiny compass inside your heart.
Every day, the world pulls you in different directions.
“Everyone else is doing it.”
“Nobody will know.”
“Just this once.”
“It's easier this way.”
But God's Word quietly points us back.
Is it right?
Is it kind?
Is it honest?
Is it fair?
Micah 6:8 gives us a beautiful compass:
Do what is right.
Love mercy.
Walk humbly with God.
Not only when someone is watching.
Not only when you'll get a reward.
Not only when doing right is easy.
Even when no one applauds.
💛 Being Right Isn't the Same as Being Kind
There is another beautiful part of this verse.
God doesn't only tell us to do what is right.
He also tells us to love mercy.
Because knowing right from wrong should never make us cruel.
Imagine your friend makes a mistake.
You may be right.
They may truly be wrong.
But you still have a choice in how you respond.
You can embarrass them.
Or you can help them.
You can shout:
“I told you so!”
Or you can say:
“That wasn't the right choice. Let's figure out how to fix it.”
Truth matters.
But so does the heart carrying the truth.
Do what is right, and leave room for mercy.
🌱 And Sometimes... We're the Ones Who Were Wrong
This may be the hardest part.
Sometimes the person who needs correcting is...
us.
Oops. 😅
We said the mean thing.
We told the half-truth.
We blamed someone else.
We knew better and did it anyway.
Doing what is right doesn't mean never making mistakes.
It means having the courage to turn around when we realize we are going the wrong way.
“I did it.”
“I'm sorry.”
“How can I make it right?”
Those sentences may feel uncomfortable.
But they are the words of a growing heart.
✨ Character Is Built in the Tiny Moments
One day, our children will make decisions when we aren't standing beside them.
We won't be there to whisper the answer.
And that is why today's small choices matter.
Returning something that isn't theirs.
Telling the truth even when it might mean consequences.
Including the child everyone else ignores.
Admitting a mistake.
Standing up for someone being treated unfairly.
Choosing compassion when they could choose revenge.
These moments may look tiny.
But they are building something enormous:
character.
🌟 A Question to Carry for Life
So instead of only telling a child:
“Make good choices.”
Give them a question.
When they're confused...
When friends are pressuring them...
When nobody is watching...
When doing the right thing feels inconvenient...
Let them ask:
“What is the right thing to do?”
And then one more:
“Can I do it with kindness?”
That is a beautiful heart compass.
Right without kindness can become harsh.
Kindness without truth can lose its direction.
But truth, mercy, and humility together?
That's a life worth building.
💛 Today's Heart Check
Before you go to bed tonight, ask:
Was I honest today?
Was I fair?
Did I show mercy when someone made a mistake?
Is there anything I need to make right?
We don't ask these questions to prove that we're perfect.
We ask them because we are still growing.
Children are growing.
Parents are growing.
All of us are.
And thankfully, God doesn't ask us to impress Him with perfection.
He shows us a better way:
Do what is right.
Love mercy.
Walk humbly with Him.
One decision.
One apology.
One act of courage.
One ordinary day at a time.
🧭 Today's Memory Message
Even when no one is watching, I can choose what is right.
🙏 A Simple Prayer
Dear God,
give me a heart that knows what is right
and the courage to choose it.
Help me tell the truth when it is difficult,
show mercy when others make mistakes,
and admit it when I am wrong.
Teach me to walk humbly with You
and let kindness guide the way I treat others.
Amen.
