Be Kind and Compassionate

A Beautiful Verse for a New School Year

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” - Ephesians 4:32

A new school year brings many new beginnings.

New classrooms.
New teachers.
New routines.
New faces.
New opportunities.

And for many children in New York this week, school is beginning with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Some children walk in confidently. Others walk in quietly, hoping someone will notice them, include them, or simply be kind.

That is why Ephesians 4:32 is such a meaningful verse for back-to-school season:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another.”

What a simple verse.
And what a powerful one.

At the start of a school year, children do not need to have the coolest backpack, the perfect outfit, or all the right words. But they can carry something even more important into the classroom:

kindness.

Kindness can look small, but it makes a big difference.

It can sound like:

  • “Hi, want to sit with me?”
  • “You can go first.”
  • “Are you okay?”
  • “Do you want to share?”
  • “I like your drawing.”
  • “You can play with us.”

Compassion means noticing how someone else may feel and responding with care.

Maybe someone is shy.
Maybe someone misses their old teacher.
Maybe someone is having a hard first week.
Maybe someone feels left out at lunch.

A compassionate child does not ignore that pain.
A compassionate child becomes a little light.

This is one of the best ways children can reflect God’s love at school.

Not by being perfect.
Not by always having the right answer.
But by having a soft heart.

A new school year is a chance to begin again — not only academically, but personally. Children can decide:

  • I will be kind with my words.
  • I will be patient when someone struggles.
  • I will include others.
  • I will treat people with care.
  • I will remember that everyone is carrying something.

And when children make mistakes — because they will — this verse still leads them back. Kindness and compassion are not one-time actions. They are choices we keep making, again and again.

This week, if your child feels nervous about school, remind them of this:

You do not have to do everything perfectly.
But you can always choose kindness.

And if every child brought a little more kindness into the classroom… whew.
That classroom would be brighter than a brand-new pack of glitter gel pens. ✨😂

Simple Prayer

Dear God,
Thank You for this new school year.
Help me be kind and compassionate to others.
Help me notice when someone feels lonely, nervous, or left out.
Teach me to use gentle words, caring actions, and a loving heart.
Let Your love shine through me at school.
Amen.
