A Friend Loves at All Times
“A friend loves at all times.” — Proverbs 17:17 —

A new school year always arrives with a little bit of everything.
New pencils.
New notebooks.
New teachers.
New classrooms.
And somewhere underneath all that excitement, there may also be one quiet question:
“Who will I sit with?”
Or maybe…
“Will I make a friend?”
For children, the beginning of a school year can feel like standing at the doorway of something completely new.
There are familiar faces.
There are strangers.
There may be a best friend waiting across the hallway.
Or there may be a child walking into school wondering if anyone will notice them at all.
That is why today’s verse feels especially important.
“A friend loves at all times.”
It doesn't say:
“A friend loves when everything is fun.”
Or:
“A friend loves when we agree.”
It says:
At all times.
That means friendship is bigger than sitting together at lunch or laughing on the playground.
Friendship is something we practice.
💛 Before We Ask, “Will I Have a Friend?”
At the beginning of a school year, it is natural for children to hope:
“I hope someone likes me.”
“I hope I find my people.”
“I hope I’m not alone.”
Those feelings are real.
But Proverbs 17:17 gives us another beautiful question to carry into school:
“What kind of friend can I be?”
Can I notice the new child?
Can I make room at the table?
Can I say hello first?
Can I cheer for someone who is nervous?
Can I listen when a friend has had a hard day?
Suddenly, friendship becomes something more than something we wait to receive.
It becomes something we can give.
🌱 Sometimes Friendship Begins With One Small Brave Thing
Imagine walking into the cafeteria.
You already know where your friends are sitting.
Then you notice another child carrying a lunch tray, looking around the room.
No one is being mean.
No one is laughing.
But no one is making space either.
This is one of those tiny moments that might look unimportant.
But it isn’t.
You scoot your chair over.
You wave.
“You can sit here.”
That's it.
Five words.
But to the child holding that tray?
Those five words might change their entire first day.
That is what love can look like at school.
Not always something huge.
Sometimes it is simply noticing.
🌈 A Real Friend Is There on More Than the Good Days
There will be fun days this school year.
There will be birthday invitations, recess jokes, projects, games, and lots of silly laughter.
But there will also be days when someone gets left out.
Days when friends misunderstand each other.
Days when someone loses.
Days when someone cries.
Days when a friend isn't very fun to be around.
And that is when the words “at all times” begin to mean something.
A true friend can say:
“Are you okay?”
“Want to talk about it?”
“I’m still your friend.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Let’s try again.”
Friendship doesn’t mean we never disagree.
It means we learn how to care about each other even when friendship gets a little messy.
And trust me...
with kids, it occasionally gets very messy. 😄
✨ You Don't Have to Be Everyone's Best Friend
This is important for children to understand too.
Being loving does not mean you have to be best friends with everyone.
You may naturally connect with some people more than others.
That is okay.
But we can still treat everyone with dignity.
We can still include.
We can still be respectful.
We can still refuse to make someone feel small just because they aren't part of our closest group.
There is a big difference between:
“You aren't my best friend.”
and
“You don't matter.”
Every child matters.
🏫 A Beautiful Goal for the New School Year
What if instead of only asking:
“Did you make any friends today?”
we sometimes asked:
“Were you a good friend to someone today?”
That little question changes the focus.
From popularity...
to character.
From being chosen...
to choosing kindness.
From:
“Did people include me?”
to:
“Did I notice someone who needed including?”
That is a lesson children can carry far beyond school.
Because classrooms eventually become workplaces.
Playground friendships eventually become adult relationships.
And the child who learns to care about people now is practicing something they will need for the rest of their life.
💛 For the Child Who Is Nervous About Going Back
If you are worried about the new school year, remember this:
You do not have to walk into school and impress everyone.
You do not need twenty friends by Friday.
You do not have to be the funniest, coolest, loudest, or most confident person in the room.
Start small.
Smile at someone.
Say hello.
Learn a name.
Invite someone in.
Be the friend you hope to find.
And give friendship time to grow.
Some of the best friendships don't begin with fireworks.
Sometimes they begin with:
“Hi.”
🌟 Our Back-to-School Friendship Challenge
This week, choose one:
Say hello first.
Sit beside someone new.
Give one sincere compliment.
Help someone who is struggling.
Listen without interrupting.
Invite someone to join.
One little act of friendship can become one very important memory.
💛 Today’s Memory Message
Don’t only look for a good friend. Be one.
Because:
“A friend loves at all times.” — Proverbs 17:17
This school year, may our children find wonderful friends.
But even more than that...
may they become the kind of friends who make classrooms warmer, lunch tables wider, difficult days lighter, and other children feel a little less alone.
That would be a pretty wonderful way to begin a new school year. 💛
🙏 A Simple Back-to-School Prayer
Dear God,
thank You for a new school year and new beginnings.
Help me be brave enough to say hello,
kind enough to include others,
and patient enough to be a good friend even when things are hard.
Help me notice anyone who feels alone.
Give me good friends,
and help me become a good friend too.
Amen.
